This is an introduction to key components that support staff can use to integrate trauma informed approach in facility operations and all resident interactions.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe key trauma-informed care terms and concepts and how they apply in the nursing home setting.
  2. Explain the impact of a nervous system response and how to incorporate a trauma-informed approach for resident expressions of distress.
  3. Differentiate between trauma screening and trauma assessment and why this distinction is critical.
  4. Operationalize CMS federal guidelines trauma-informed care in nursing facilities.
  5. Articulate strategies to apply trauma-informed care principles in daily care and facility operations.

the center of excellence for behavioral health in nursing facilities (COE-NF)

Established by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), in partnership with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the COE-NF offers Certified Medicare and Medicaid Nursing Facility Staff a centralized resource hub with easy access to trainings, technical assistance and additional resources, at no cost.

We help nursing facilities to improve the quality of life and care provided for residents who are experiencing a variety of behavioral health disorders, with a focus on Serious Mental Illness (SMI), Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Co-Occurring Disorders (COD).
