About Give the Boost a Shot

Best Practice/Center of the Week

Positive Peer Support at Anniston Health and Rehab Services in Alabama
The staff at Anniston Health and Rehab Services in Alabama have increased their resident booster rates from <40% to over 80%! The facility continues to focus on boosters for residents and staff. Their administrator has done personal phone calls to family members to educate them on the effectiveness of the vaccine. Additionally, the DON and Administrator meet with residents during activities to discuss COVID-19, vaccines, and related topics. The positive peer support has been a driver of their success!

If you would like to share your success story, please email Leighann Sauls at Booster@allianthealth.org. We want to hear from YOU!

Latest Guidance/Updates
  • Cardiac Complications More Common After COVID-19 Than Vaccination
The risk of developing myocarditis and other inflammatory heart conditions after COVID-19 vaccination is substantially lower than it is after SARS-CoV-2 infection, according to an analysis of electronic health records from 40 US health systems. Read More
  • U.S. to extend COVID-19 public-health emergency past mid-July
Bloomberg (5/16, Griffin) reports, “The U.S. government will extend the COVID-19 public-health emergency past mid-July, continuing pandemic-era policies as the nearly 2 1/2-year outbreak drags on.” Last week, several health organizations “wrote to HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra urging the Biden administration to maintain the emergency ‘until it is clear that the global pandemic has receded and the capabilities authorized by the PHE are no longer necessary.’” Read More
  • Latest Covid-19 Wave Expands to More of U.S.

  • CDC Strengthens Recommendations and Expands Eligibility for COVID-19 Booster Shots
Following the May 19, 2022 meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP), CDC is expanding eligibility of COVID-19 vaccine booster doses to everyone 5 years of age and older. CDC now recommends that children ages 5 through 11 years should receive a booster shot 5 months after their initial Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination series. Since the pandemic began, more than 4.8 million children ages 5 through 11 have been diagnosed with COVID-19, 15,000 have been hospitalized and, tragically, over 180 have died. As cases increase across the country, a booster dose will safely help restore and enhance protection against severe disease. In addition, the CDC is strengthening its recommendation that those 12 and older who are immunocompromised and those 50 and older should receive a second booster dose at least 4 months after their first. Over the past month we have seen steady increases in cases, with a steep and substantial increase in hospitalizations for older Americans. While older Americans have the highest coverage of any age group of first booster doses, most older Americans received their last dose (either their primary series or their first booster dose) many months ago, leaving many who are vulnerable without the protection they may need to prevent severe disease, hospitalization, and death.
